Two-Time Sit Down: An Awake Eating Method™ Exercise
A key component in awake and intuitive eating is learning how to feel your body. Step four in The Awake Eating Method™ is all about this. You learn how to open yourself up to the sensations and feelings of your body and your emotional self. You move through any blockages or stand-offs that may be preventing you from achieveing your health goals by becoming aware and empowered. The Two Time Sit Down Exercise is a non-threatening homework assignment for those of you who want to begin to investigate how to do just that. All it requires is an extra 20 minutes at mealtime to implement the experiment.
The Two-Time Sit Down Exercise
- Pick a meal that you do not have an emotional charge about. Everyone has a meal that means a lot to them and that they look forward to more than any other. You are going to want to perform this exercise at a meal that is not as important.
- Serve yourself the regular amount you usually would. Pile your plate high or prepare the multilayered sandwich with chips on the side as you normally do.
- Divide the amount you just allotted in half. Do this by either drawing a line through your plate if you can or taking the amount you just served and placing it onto another dish. You are going to be able to eat the whole amount so do not worry about not getting enough food.
- Eat as you normally would (preferably applying The Awake Eating Method™ but that is not a deal breaker here). Once you reach the end of the half stop.
- Go and perform a couple of tasks on your to-do list. Call a parent or friend, sweep the floor, take the dog on a walk or do some jumping jacks. The only important aspect of this task is that it requires your focus and energy for at least 15-20 minutes.
- After completing this task sit down in front of the second half of your meal and feel your body. Ask yourself these questions: How hungry am I? On a scale of 1-10 (1 being literally starving and 10 being stuffed to the gills) how full am I? Do I still feel fatigued, irritable or I need of energy from food? Do I want to eat even though I am full? Take note of how your physical and emotional hunger or fullness feels.
- Eat the rest of your food if you would like. You can choose to save it for later if you realize you are no longer hungry.
